1.Online Nigerian protest against violence towards women. Particularly the gruesome murder of Titi Arowolo and also the Abia rape case. Nigerian Bloggers and online campaigners, you rock!
2. Nigerian government, police and fake pastors are finding out that with the INTERNET, there is no where to hide!
3. The growth of 'African Writing' and Nigerian literature. Long may it continue.
4. Facebook: Reading funny status updates. Favourite FB personality: Literary critic Ikhide Ikheloa
5. People 'defriending' on facebook based on principles and beliefs. 'Homophobic friend' defriending particularly caught on amongst my facebook friends. So cool!
6. Free music and video sharing online....do people still find it necessary to buy?
7. 'Ditching' British soap opera "Eastenders" after 20 years ...The number of years wasted.
8. Xmas presents - particularly from my son Ore and two friends...thoughtful and lovely.
9. After-Xmas sales...Never did the sales before - my sizes are unique. Could not believe the bargains this year.
10. Mild British winter...so far. The warmest December in a very long time.

1. Activities of Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram (over 40 reported dead following bombing on Christmas day) and the Nigerian president's failure to address the issue.Where are you headed, Nigeria?
2. Appalling record of Nigerian government response to violence towards women.
3. Homophobia may soon become a legalized Nigerian 'institution', thanks to the government anti-gay 'same sex marriage prohibition bill' which also bans the activities of pro-gay associations.
4. Accidents on death-trap Nigerian roads. 'Lost count of show biz personalities dead in road accidents this year. Imagine the countless faces of unknown people who did too.
5. The recession...puts a dampener on most things.
6. British Prime minister David Cameron and the conservative party's policies on everything affecting ordinary people
7. Facebook: Vile homophobic, sexist and intolerant ('faith') comments.
8. Online bitching: Women who put down other women for no reason.
9. US chat show host Wendy Williams...arrrrgh! What's her show about?
10. Gossip blogging that translates into humiliating people for commercial gain. Stop!!!
The next time I see you would be in the New Year. Happy 'Fantabulous' New Year, people!

ReplyDelete#2a - AMEN! Nothing that is done under the sun will remain hidden forever.
#3a - thank God for that o!!!
#6a - Grooveshark is one of the best things I discovered this year. My companion at work and at home. If only it worked on my iPad :(
All the b's are just sad. I can't even decide which is worst. Wendy Williams... well she seems to be a big hit among some, lol.
Happy New year!!! Facebook doesn't seem like the place to be anymore.
ReplyDeleteI was proud of my friends and online community in general with how they all spoke out the ABSU rape case. It made it obvious that we can achieve anything if we all stick together and speak out against anything.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy your holidays and have a blessed new year
Happy new year in advance
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Naijalines, Thanks for being awesome :).

ReplyDeleteHappy qnd prosperous 2012 ahead!
The issues of homosexuality and violence against women were like the two faces of Janus. It was good to finally see loud and 'sustained' talk about it online. but of course, the worms came crawling out of the woodwork too. its all good anyway. lets keep talking.
ReplyDeleteI was lookin askance at the defriending someone cause of beliefs, till i remembered doing something similar. I didnt unfriend him, just hid his hateful updates from view.
I need to add Ikhide Ikheloa as a friend. I loved his blog on 234next. but he stopped or is it that i stopped reading 234next...
anyway happy 2012!!
Thank you so much for this post. With all the hatred and ignorance rampant on the web from Nigerians, it's often difficult to weed through it all to find like-minded Naija peeps. I am grateful to have found your blog before the year is up and will be here often in 2012. Happy New Year!
