While on the school run today, this lovely older lady (who joins me in a convo depending on how much time we've both got to kill) ambles up next to me. Looking at me eyeball to eyeball, she says: "God punish you!" In confusion, I do a double take. Obviously enjoying my discomfort, she again says: "God punish you!"
"Why now, mama?", I burst out laughing (try to hide my discomfort and pray fervently that she'd better come up with a smart story on this one or....!!!)
"Ahn ahn, why...all of you...two two children! Holding back God's blessings! "You've got two too, haven't you?"
"Yes...I say hesitatingly. Yes, mama?"
"Ah...why? Don't you know you are holding back the blessings for your race, your community? You use technology to limit God's blessings. All these children you kill every month, they will stare at you in heaven when you get there." Mama starts laughing. I join in. I explain that life is hard in today's world. Most people cannot afford to have more than two. There is no help, money buys less, lifestyles are hectic, too much to do, very high expectations, etc.
"But they manage it back home don't they?" Quipped mama.
"Ah...mama, but people starve too when they have more children than they can feed." Is that not part of the problem in Africa? There is so much poverty. We can't eat children, yet we keep having them.
Perhaps some of us in the diaspora are cautious. I know quite a few African families in the UK with five or six children, regardless. Statistics in the UK show that ethnic minority populations* would soar over that of the indigenous population in the next three decades. It would seem that despite crossing the great atlantic, our ability to breed has not deserted us. God may not punish us afterall.
*Ethnic minority populations include Africans and other ethnic groups in the UK.

ReplyDeleteIgnorance is a fucking disease.
ReplyDeleteWhat does she mean by children you kill month after month? Does she realise that if you just kept getting pregnant and popping them out one after another you'd eventually DIE?
And does she realise that there already too many people on this planet sharing our limited resources?
Another person's reproductive choice is none of your damn business as long as it's not affecting you.
People who have few children are not affecting us so it's none of our business.
People who have many children on the other hand are consuming more than their fair share of our collective air, water, and other resources so it is our business to advise them to stop.
Lol, that woman should come to Nigeria, and observe that the poorest families have the highest number of children. Most of these children turn out to be roadside hawkers, beggars, and housemaids. She should come and see some of the things these innocent kids suFfer, then she can come to a right conclusion on what type of parents, God should be punishing
ReplyDeleteI have 2 children. If I had my way I would just have stopped at one but we wanted a subling for our first. I love my kids to bits and would give an arm or leg for them but having too many especially if you live in the west like I do is asking for trouble. Anyone who still encourages people to have many children is still living in the past and needs a rude awakening.
ReplyDeleteWhere that woman chose to start from is too funny o. Make person no hold back on God's blessings, make the blessing kill am nau. LOL
ReplyDeleteIn today's economy, one had better be wise cos its even in wisdom blessings overflows. No wonder the bible says, "Blessed is the servant that acts wisely" .

LOL... I honestly don't know if I should laugh or cry..."children you kill every month, they will stare at you in heaven when you get there" Seriously? hahahahhhaha.....I sincerely think we need a law in place for maximum kids per adult.

ReplyDeleteLol..,holding back God's blessing....lol
ReplyDeleteWith the world's population at 7 billion (or so they say) I am half contemplating one kid sef and adopting.
ReplyDeleteThe headache i see families going through in the name of finding a nanny/childminder scares me. Some feel so helpless rtying to jumble husband, job and kids. Aunty should mind who gives her 'blessings to' unless she might just get an answer she didn't bargain for from a frustrated wife/mother.
Earth's population recently reached a very overcrowded, underfunded 7 billion. So, in that regard, the Earth is PLENTIFUL. I too doubt if God will punish mankind for not having rooms full of kids, but I do believe His wrath remains forthcoming due to the manner in which the world has turned...
ReplyDeleteInteresting post and video of a woman who bore 15 kids and now adamantly refuses to accept the fact that city government is unable to "take care of them."
